Aachen is located between Maastricht (NL) and Liège (BE) in the west and Bonn (DE) and Cologne (DE) in the east. It has a long history and is a touristic highlight of the region. It developed from a Roman settlement and bath complex and subsequently became the main place of residence of Emperor Charlemagne who commissioned the Cathedral (Aachener Dom) completed in the year 803 AD. The Aachen Town Hall, completed in 1349 AD, has been a place of coronation until 1531.
Today, Aachen is a vibrant University town with over 60.000 students attending the RWTH Aachen University and the Aachen University of Applied Sciences.
