The RWTH is one of the top German Universities in technology and natural sciences, with a strong commitment to interdisciplinary research, diversity, and internationalization. Its Institute of Integrated Photonics carries out research focused on silicon, silicon nitride and GaAs photonics in the application fields of datacom, co-packaged optics, electrical-optical signal processing and optical artificial neural networks, biosensing at short wavelengths, and optical interconnects for solid-state quantum computing platforms.
Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics – Department of Nanophotonics, Integration, and Neural Technology
The Max Planck Institute of Microstructure Physics (MPI-MSP) has extensive experimental and theoretical research programs in materials, devices, and microsystems. The mission of the Department of Nanophotonics, Integration, and Neural Technology (NINT) at the MPI-MSP is to augment human capabilities with devices and microsystems for future computers. Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT) – Institute of Photonics and Quantum Electronics (IPQ)
The research at IPQ covers photonic integrated circuits and the associated applications. These comprise optical fiber-bound and free-space communications as well as wireless transmission at THz-frequency carriers, optical metrology and sensing, and ultra-fast signal processing, including conventional digital signal processing and the use of neural networks. Essential parts of our technology-oriented activities are hybrid integration of organic materials on silicon photonic waveguides, 3D nano-printing of optical waveguides and devices, or the fabrication of chip-scale optical frequency comb generators.
