Cutting-edge Integrated Photonics in Space

Integrated photonics has emerged as a transformative technology with significant potential for Space-based applications. This invited talk delves into the latest advancements, challenges, and opportunities surrounding the use of integrated photonics in the realm of space exploration and communication. Focusing on the unique demands of space environments, the talk addresses key technological innovations that enable robustness, miniaturization, and enhanced performance of Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs) in space applications.

It explores new paradigms and systems to withstand the harsh conditions of space while maintaining high functionality and reliability, overcoming the main bottlenecks of the standard competing technologies.

About Caterina Ciminelli
Caterina Ciminelli received the Laurea degree in electronic engineering and the Ph.D. in electronic engineering, from Politecnico di Bari, Bari, Italy, in 1996 and 2000, respectively. From 1999 to 2002, she did industrial research activity on optoelectronic components and subsystems with the R&D Division of Pirelli Optical Systems, Milan, Italy, and Cisco Photonics Italy, Monza, Italy. In May 2002, she joined Politecnico di Bari as an Assistant Professor of Electronics. Since April 2012, she has been an Associate Professor at Politecnico di Bari where she is head of the research Group of the Optoelectronics Laboratory. She was a visiting student with the Research Center of Alcatel, Marcoussis, France, in 1999, and a Visiting Researcher with Glasgow University, in 2004. She is author or co-author of more than 200 journal articles and conference papers. She is involved in several research projects, also as Scientific Coordinator. Her research interests include integrated optoelectronics and photonics. She is a co-inventor of a patent. From January 2007 to December 2010, she was a member of the Board of Directors of the Italian Society for Optics and Photonics. From 2012 to 2018, she was a member of the Board of Directors of the Italian Electronic Society. She served as a member of the Programme Committee of numerous international conferences. She is currently a member of the Italian Chapter of the IEEE Photonics Society. She is a Senior Member of the Optical Society of America and IEEE.

About Politecnico di Bari, Optoelectronics Laboratory
The research fields of the laboratory is modelling, design, fabrication and characterization of optoelectronic and photonic waveguiding components and devices for a wide spectrum of applications such as inertial navigation, biochemical sensing, optoelectronic modulation, optoelectronic beamforming and steering, optoelectronic signal processing and so on.
The main current research topic are:
I. Modeling, design, and optical characterization of miniaturized optoelectronic gyros for aerospace
II. Biosensors based on photonic/plasmonic micro-cavities and hybrid photonic/plasmonic nanotweezers for future medicine
III. Integrated microwawe photonics
