Advances in electro-optical components for datacom and sensing applications

This presentation provides an overview of recent advances in electro-optical devices and system architectures for data communications, telecommunication transceivers, and 3D sensing applications. On the transmitter side, progress in directly modulated lasers and externally modulated lasers will be reviewed. The directly modulated lasers include gallium arsenide (GaAs) vertical cavity surface emitting lasers (VCSELs) and Indium phosphide (InP) distributed feedback lasers (DFBs).

The components which use external modulation include InP electro-absorption modulated lasers (EMLs), Distributed Feedback Laser with Mach Zehnder, (DFB-MZ), photonic integrated circuits, and silicon photonics. The receiver technology advancements reviewed include GaAs, InGaAs/InP, and Ge-based photodiodes. The talk will examine new developments in transceiver system architectures including pluggable modules, near-, and co-packaged optics. It will also cover a reviewed of 3D sensing system architectures including Light Detection and Ranging (LiDAR). This review aims to provide an update on the state-of-the-art technologies enabling next-generation high-speed optical applications.

About Anna Tatarczak
Anna Tatarczak is a Senior Principal Scientist at the CTO office of Coherent. She holds a B.Sc. in Electronics from Warsaw University of Technology, and an M.S. and Ph.D. in Nanophononics from Denmark Technical University. She has worked on optical systems and VCSEL design for datacom and sensing applications at Finisar and II-VI. Currently at Coherent she investigates forward-looking technologies.
